Skybox F5 crashing when connecting USB device

I've bought a Skybox F5 and when connecting a USB drive the box will crash and won't reboot unless the drive is removed. I've tried 2 sticks and also a HDD to narrow down that the problem is with the box.

has anyone else had this issue before and how did they resolve it? I assume it'll need replacing.
